Prof. Juozas Kupčinskas

Prof. Juozas Kupcinskas is a Dean of Postgraduate Study Center at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Kaunas, Lithuania. Currently, he is also professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at the same university. He received his MD from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Lithuania in 2009. He has completed his Ph.D. at Otto Von Guericke University (Magdeburg, Germany) in 2012 and gained subsequent medical experience at University of Kiel (Germany) and Rambam hospital (Haifa, Israel). Since 2018, he is Secretary General of Lithuanian Society of Gastroenterology. He is a member many international research consortia including PANcreatic Disease ReseArch (Pandora), European Microscopic Colitis Study Group (EMCG), Gastric Cancer Research (staR), and European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma and others.

Since 2004 at the VUmc Medical Centre (School of Medical Sciences) and since 2013 at the department of Science (Athena Institute for Transdisciplinary Research). Dean of the OLVG teaching hospital. Since 2018 member of the supervisory board of the health insurance company Menzis.
Research: I have shifted my focus from biomedical research to research on paradigm changes in health care and societal accountability of medical education programs.
Curriculum design: I was both at National and European level project leader of the curriculum design for post graduate training in obstetrics and gynecology. I was advisor in curriculum design in several other medical disciplines.
Teaching: Besides the daily clinical bedside teaching I have (co) designed workshops about: teaching, assessment, portfolio, EPA’s, CBME, curriculum design, change management, negotiation, leadership, team skills and holistic approach of vulnerable patients.

Prof. Linda Snell

Linda Snell MD MHPE FRCPC MACP FRCP (London) FCAHS is a professor of Medicine & Health Sciences Education at McGill University in Montreal Canada, and Senior Clinician Educator at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is active in teaching, education leadership and education research at all levels of medical training. She has served in numerous educational and clinical leadership roles at McGill, the Royal College, nationally and internationally. In medical education she has presented over 200 invited talks in over 40 countries, and has published over 110 peer-reviewed papers, two dozen invited chapters, editorials, and commissioned reports, and over 120 abstracts and posters. Her weekly KeyLIME podcast (Key Literature in Medical Education), a medical education journal club, had 300,000 downloads last year. She has been recognized by many local, national and international teaching, leadership and education awards. Her current interests include faculty development for competency- based education, advanced training for clinician-educators and medical education scholars; learning, teaching & assessing the CanMEDS competencies, in particular the Roles of Professional, Leader and Scholar; leadership in medical education; and education scholarship. Clinically, Dr. Snell is a consultant in general internal medicine.

Prof. Adelle Atkinson

Dr. Atkinson completed her MD at McMaster University in 1994 and went on to complete her Paediatric Residency at the University of Toronto in 1998 taking on the role of Chief Paediatric Resident in her final year. From 1998 – 2000 Dr. Atkinson completed two years of subspecialty training in Paediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of Toronto. After completing this program, she was offered a consultant position in the Division of Immunology and Allergy with a cross appointment to the section of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
Dr. Atkinson is currently a Professor of Paediatrics in the Department of Paediatrics, and a consultant Immunologist/Allergist in the Division of Immunology and Allergy. Her clinical work focuses on patients with primary immunodeficiencies, bone marrow transplantation, and complex allergic diseases with an emphasis on reactions to foods, drugs and biologics.
Dr. Atkinson currently holds the position of Associate Chair – Education, and the position of Director of Postgraduate Medical Education for the Department of Paediatrics. In the latter role, she adminisers the training program for over 80 paediatric residents at the University of Toronto, from 2006 - current. She is a graduate of the Education Scholar’s Program, through the Centre for Faculty Development. She is the winner of the PARO Best Residency Program (2008), the Dr. Sarita Verma Award for Mentorship and Advocacy (2009), the Harry Bain Award for teaching excellence (2014), the Department of Paediatrics Continuing Education Award (2018), the Paediatric Chairs of Canada Clinician Educator Award (2018), the International Conference on Residency Education – Program Director of the Year award (2019) and the CPS - Michel Weber Education Award (2020). She spends over 50% of her time in medical education related activities.
Dr. Atkinson also holds several other leadership positions including Chair – Specialty Committee for Paediatrics as well as the Departmental lead for CBME.
Dr. Atkinson is also a Clinician Educator with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a focus on the Implementation of Competence by Design.

Dr. Jonas Nordquist
Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden
Jonas Nordquist, PhD is the associate residency director at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, overseeing its 44 residency programs and 700 residents. He is also a scholar in medical education at Karolinska Institutet where he serves as the Karolinska Institutet’s Prize for Research in Medical Educations Fellows Director. His research has mainly focused on educational leadership and how physical space impacts on learning. He has multiple roles at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and as serve as a faculty development hub leader for the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), USA. He is an overseas fellow at the Royal Society of Medicine, UK.
Dr J. Nordquist has a strong interest in media production and has been working with a group of BBC broadcasters for over 10 years. In addition, he is deeply involved in the humanities with a BA in art history and a BA in theatre studies.

Prof. Olle Ten Cate

Olle ten Cate, PhD is a professor of medical education at University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, and adjunct professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
With a background of undergraduate medical training and a PhD in social sciences, he has four decades of experience, at the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht, with curriculum innovation, educational research, and faculty development in the health professions domain, locally, nationally and internationally. He was the founding director of the Center for Research and Development of Education at UMC Utrecht (2005-2017), served as the president of the Netherlands Association for Medical Education (2006-2012), and has published (450+) and presented (500+) widely about advances in health professions education. He has successfully mentored 24 doctoral students for a PhD in health professions education and currently supervises 9 candidates. For his work he received several awards, among which the J.P. Hubbard award of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Ian R. Hart award for innovation in medical education, the NVMO Han Moll medal and a Dutch Royal Distinction for contributions to medical education. He is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association.
One of his interests is competency-based education in the health professions, and specifically in the application of entrustable professional activities and entrustment decision making, to improve education to serve the quality and safety of health care practice.

Prof. Paul LP Brand

Professor Paul Brand (1961) has worked as a consultant paediatrician for respiratory and allergic diseases at the Isala Hospital in Zwolle, the Netherlands, for more than 20 years. He is currently the Dean of Medical Education and Faculty Development at the same hospital, and professor of Clinical Medical Education at the University Medical Centre in Groningen, the Netherlands.
Paul’s research interests focus on the art and science of becoming a medical specialist, and remaining a happy one throughout one’s career. He works on learning evidence based medicine skills, shared decision making, providing effective and constructive feedback, and on the learning environment in clinical medical education. Paul has contributed to more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has edited acclaimed textbooks on medical education and paediatrics in Dutch. He published two novels in the Dutch language. He is married with five children. His hobbies include writing and mountain biking.

Prof. Andrius Macas

Assoc. Prof. Gvidas Urbonas, PhD

After finishing master’s studies in philosophy of science, I defended a PhD in public health after investigating associations between service quality and ethical climate at community pharmacies. Dr. Kasparas Briedis

Dr. Briedis MSc, MD, MHEM is a Structural Interventional Cardiologist at the Hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics. In 2018, he was awarded a 12-month Fellowship Grant for Training in Structural Heart Interventions from the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI). He was trained in structural heart interventions at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (Liverpool, UK), Humanitas Research Hospital (Milan, Italy), and Luzerner Kantonsspital (Lucerne, Switzerland).
In 2020, Dr. Briedis was awarded scholarships from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania, and Marius Jakulis Jason Foundation for the Executive MSc studies in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences, and he gained his MSc degree in Health Economics and Management in 2022.
Dr. Briedis is a Lecturer and a PhD Candidate at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences with a research focus on the first-in-human heart valve interventions and new technologies for structural heart diseases. He is also a Clinical Proctor, Consultant, and Educational Trainer for many world-renowned medical companies. Dr. Briedis is involved in numerous multicenter clinical trials, has presented and published over 60 research projects in international scientific oral communications and peer-reviewed medical journals.

Karolis Bareikis

Nowadays in this vuca world we are forced to encounter various complex and complicated problems where both doctors and patients might find themselves at risk. Good communication between team members, collaboration, situational awareness and shared mental model could help us to encounter those problems in easier manner, reduce stress and improve patient outcomes. However, there are still many barriers preventing our everyday teams from effective collaboration and problem solving. During our workshop Karolis Bareikis and I will elaborate on these issues and together with participants we will try to find ways of how to improve teamwork with improving communication and breaking the long standing barriers.

Kristina Ziuteliene

Kristina Ziutelienė is a certified family medicine physician, assistant professor, and a PhD candidate practicing at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Family Medicine Department. Kristina has been actively involved in the field of medical education, continuous professional development and life-long learning since 2014 when served as the elected vice-president for external affairs at the European Medical Students Association and as Permanent Officer at CPME. In recent years she was appointed as a coordinator for the development of new medical program courses “Introduction to the profession” and “Professionalism” at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Having participated as a delegate advisor in the national review process of the Medicine study program in 2021, later on, was invited to join the working group on developing new competency-based post-graduate program for family medicine training in Lithuania. She has served as an executive board member for the European Young Family Doctors Movement (2017-2020) an affiliate of World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of Family Physicians (WONCA) and is an active member at the Lithuanian College of Family Physicians.

Prof. Žilvinas Dambrauskas

Žilvinas Dambrauskas currently is the head of the LSMU CEBM. He works as the professor and the abdominal surgeon in the Department of Surgery, LSMU. He has been on a number of clinical rotations and placement since at the best-known clinics in the UK, USA, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and has co-authored over 50 scientific papers and several textbooks. Žilvinas Dambrauskas has defended the PhD thesis „Inhibition of Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) increases responsiveness of pancreatic cancer cells to anti-cancer treatment“ in Heidelberg Ruprecht-Karls-Universität (Germany) under supervision of prof. H. Friess in 2005. But he proudly admits that the whole journey started with the studies at the Secondary and high school No. 5 in Panevezys (Lithuania) and a year at Ashville College, Harrogate (England) after winning a scholarship established by the G. Soros Foundation and the Open Society Fund-Lithuania. It was the time, when he realized how important is to stay curious and keep moving forward.
